INTERNATIONAL LAW: US flagrantly violates Geneva Convention 5:48PM EST Monday, 5/26/2003
[link to this item] |
In a shocking development, the UK's Observer yesterday revealed a large-scale US violation of international law. The US, supposedly fighting on behalf of democracy and international law, denied the Red Cross access to as many as 3,000 Iraqi prisoners of war and detained civilians. The ICRC's access to prisoners of war is one of the fundamental prisoner's rights guaranteed by the Third Geneva Convention. Civilians are being held (possibly looters), and according to the ICRC, have not had their families contacted, another fundamental right. According to witnesses, many prisoners are being held with their heads hooded, which could be another violation of the Geneva Convention, which prohibits "humiliating and degrading treatment". The Red Cross itself recognized the breach of the Geneva Convention, and continues to fight for access to the prisoners, who are allegedly being held in sweltering heat. (observer)
