Mark Foley and the Florida Legislature's Page Program: a Scarey Thought. 8:11PM EST Sunday, 10/1/2006

Readers may have noticed, while clicking through the reams of Mark Foley coverage, that Foley clearly e-mailed House pages, on at least two occasions (and almost certainly more), from Florida. The question as to what investigations might be undertaken in the state begins to be answered today. Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers' Florida News reports that:A spokesman for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed late Saturday the agency is deciding whether to press charges against former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, who hastily resigned from office Friday. "We will be discussing this matter with the FBI in an effort to determine if there are grounds for a criminal investigation and if so, who has jurisdiction," said Tom Berlinger, chief media spokesman for the FDLE. Berlinger said the decision would be made this week.
The questions do not end there, however. Foley spent four years as a Florida state legislator which also has a page program:Each House Member has an opportunity to sponsor one page (between the ages of 12-14) and one messenger (aged 15-18) for each year's program. Members may also submit applications for alternate messengers, who serve on an as-needed basis. How likely is it that he just developed his propensity for ephebe pages after moving on to Washington? How likely is it that no one in the state legislature would be aware of the fact if he hadn't?
