Ben Regenspan Remember September 11th of 2001, 1973 6:36PM EST Thursday, 9/11/2003 [link to this item]

In memory of September 11, 2001, a link to a collection of photos of people around the world united in mourning the loss of some 3,000 lives to the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon (via Tom of Tbogg).  Hopefully these images will serve as a reminder that the deaths of September 11th were not only a loss to the US, but to the world and to those that knew, loved, and cared about those who died.  Today should not be a time for nationalism or flag-waving - this would be a disservice to the families of those lost, many of whom have condemned the militarization and politicization following the attacks.

A beautiful statement on this matter, authored by the 9/11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, concludes:

[T]oday as we mourn, reflect and remember, we ask that you join with us in pursuit of true peace, security, and justice. We owe it to the dead, we need it for the living and we must do it for the generations to follow. Let us move forward together to build a future of peaceful tomorrows.

----

There is another September 11th worth remembering, especially following the recent declassification of a number of key government documents.  Today marks the 30th anniversary of the US-backed coup in Chile which installed Augusto Pinochet, the now-notorious dictator, in place of Communist leader Allende.  As on September 11th, 2001, roughly 3,000 lives were claimed; in this case, mainly those of leftists, who were not only killed in large numbers but "disappeared" by secret police over Pinochet's 17-year reign.  Thousands were extradited or held as political prisoners.  Documents showing a clear US connection to the coup (and Kissinger and Nixon's complicity) as well as US acknowledgement of the many deaths due to Pinochet's installation are accessible at foia.state.gov, among many other places.  For those with a decent command of Spanish, Indymedia Chile's coverage of any memorial events today is sure to be excellent.

Ben Regenspan Sharon brushes away issue of hunger in Israel 9:28PM EST Wednesday, 9/10/2003 [link to this item]

Via Aron's Israel Peace Blog, (a fabulous site definitely worth keeping bookmarked), an article on Forward.com summarizes Ariel Sharon's latest misdeed, that of denying the existence of hunger in Israel when a study financed by Israel and American Jewish organizations has shown not only the existence of hunger but that more than one-fifth of Israelis are impoverished to a degree where they cannot afford proper nutrition.

Declaring that Israel had "poverty, but no hunger," Sharon won Cabinet approval June 1 for a resolution calling on Diaspora charities to focus on "Jewish and Zionist education" rather than on Israelis' economic hardship.

Ben Regenspan The witch is dead 4:44PM EST Monday, 9/8/2003 [link to this item]

Some good news, finally...

Latest Zogby poll: "Just two in five (40%) said they would choose Bush if the election were held today, while 47% said they would elect a Democratic candidate."

A neat idea allowing people to compare their "richness" with that of most of the world's residents, and then reminding viewers, most of whom will likely find out that they are in the top percentile of wealthiness, to donate to CARE.

Ben Regenspan Marx Brothers 1:48PM EST Tuesday, 9/2/2003 [link to this item]

In honor of the California recall election, which is increasingly being compared to The Marx Brothers' antics, some links today to download hilarious Marx Brothers movies from the eDonkey filesharing program:

 -Night at the Opera
 -Duck Soup
 -Animal Crackers
 -Horse Feathers

Again, eDonkey (download) is required to get these.  Ordinarily I would not post links to copyrighted works, but it appears that Universal is being the obnoxious corporation it is and not re-releasing the movies, thus hogging some of the best slapstick humor ever.  Films this classic should be public domain (it's been over 60 years since most of them were made).

Ben Regenspan English Al-Jazeera site opens (finally) 12:07PM EST Tuesday, 9/2/2003 [link to this item]

Al-Jazeera's English website is finally open to the public after months and months of waiting.  For those who haven't seen it yet, Al-Jaz is more or less just a parallel dimension Fox News, and I'm somewhat dissapointed that Cursor feels the need to honor it, but the site will definitely be an invaluable resource for those wanting to see what's going on in the Arab world.  Hopefully readers of Al-Jazeera will use their critical minds just as they would when reading Western corporate media; sensationalism and oversimplification are immediately apparent to visitors of the site (options in a "Why did the US occupy Iraq?" poll: "To control its oil" / "To safeguard Israel's interests" / "To get rid of alleged WMDs").  That said, there are already some good articles up (see: article on Jewish anti-occupation activist Reuven Moskovitz).  To those who love political cartoons, some neat ones are up.  And if like me you're obsessed with neat foods, their main advertising link at the moment is to a Lebanese junk food website.

Lee Gillespie Article on Gay Marriage in Canada 12:57AM EST Tuesday, 9/2/2003 [link to this item]

The legalization of gay marriage in Canada was hailed as a huge legal victory, and many couples from both Canada and the United States have rushed to take advantage of the new opportunity. Some, however, are unsure or have decided they'd rather not get married. Said Canadian David Andrew "Personally, I saw marriage as a dumbing down of gay relationships. My dread is that soon you will have a complacent bloc of gay and lesbian soccer moms." (NY Times)

Ben Regenspan Neverending story of Bush lies, hypocrisy 2:17PM EST Wednesday, 8/27/2003 [link to this item]

George Bush often speaks against government employees acting "partisan", but he appears to think of himself as above this rule. In what is not only a major act of hypocrisy but also likely a major violation of the Hatch Act, (which bars government employees, including those in the executive branch, from using their office for political ends), posted to the taxpayer-supported White House website are his and Cheney's clearly political remarks during tens of Bush-Cheney fundraising events.

The transcripts, marked "For Immediate Release, Office of the Press Secretary" and "Office of the Vice President" pointedly note the wealthy audience (the reception cost $2,000 per person)'s responses:

"AUDIENCE: Four more years! Four more years! "

and include quotes such as

"With your help, the Bush-Cheney ticket in 2000 won big, and we're going to carry Virginia once again in 2004,"

and

"You're laying the foundation for what is going to be a great victory in November of '04."

The Center for Responsive Politics and other watchdog groups have condemned this breach of federal law, and the Democrats appear to have increasing backbone, their lawyers having prepared an extensive report.  It is sickening that the Bushies have reached a level where they can feel comfortable releasing, on a site paid for entirely by taxes, documents so openly advertising a use of government office for political ends.  Bush has gotten away with much worse violations of both national and international law in the past, but hopefully a violation this clear will be seized on, along with the issue of the Bush suppression of 9/11 air quality data, to finally defeat the Dark Side in 2004.

Ben Regenspan At least one ghost is haunting Bush 10:59PM EST Thursday, 8/21/2003 [link to this item]

Via The Daily Dystopian, a Madison, WI Capital Times article notes the obituary of a Wisconsin woman who died recently at 71: "Memorials in her honor can be made to any organization working for the removal of President Bush." Her daughter explained: "She thought he was a liar ...[snip]... I think his personality, just standing there with that smirk on his face, and acting like he's this holy Christian, that's what really got her." Make your next donation to a peace group or presidential campaign one in honor of Sally Baron.

Lee Gillespie Chretien on gay marriage legislation 10:56PM EST Thursday, 8/21/2003 [link to this item]

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien vowed to continue efforts to legalize gay marriage despite opposition from other members of the Liberal Party who fear that such a move would jeopardize their chances in the upcoming election. Liberal parliamentarian Pat O’Brien called the issue "explosive," saying "There's no doubt about it. This could cost us especially in Ontario rural seats where we only won by a few votes." Chretien, who will not be seeking reelection, said "We don't act with elections in mind. We act in response to problems that we face." He did, however, reject fellow proponent Mauril Belanger’s call for a vote during the upcoming autumn session, citing the government’s promise to wait for a Supreme Court opinion on the proposed legislation, which could delay the bill for up to two years.

Ben Regenspan An apology 3:06PM EST Monday, 8/18/2003 [link to this item]

Yeah, my updates have been slow recently, sorry about that, but they said "Join Us" and I did...

(I wonder how many other blogger-cashiers there are out there.  We should start a club.)

Anyway, be sure to check out the links scattered throughout the site, and to take a look at the art section, as a new poem was just added today.  If you know anyone who's generating cool art, writing, or poetry, tell them about the site as we're always looking for submissions.

Also, Cursor pointed out a great piece that Greg Palast wrote for Znet on the subject of the recent blackouts, definitely worth taking a look at.

Ben Regenspan con•ser•va•tism 12:38AM EST Monday, 8/18/2003 [link to this item]

Dammit.  I just wrote a really long response to the study I noted earlier in Catalyst Lite [trademark symbol here], basically saying that, as cool as it sounds, the government shouldn't be spending $1.2 million to finance a study that more or less restates the commonsense definition of conservatism, but then I hit the stupid backspace button without clicking in the text window I use to update the site, which went back in my browser history and erased everything I had written .  Basically I said that, though it's nice that the dangers of the conservative ideology were highlighted in the report, it's spending on jargon-y things like this (along with the bloated military, prison, etc budgets), which are leeching the funding from the social programs so necessary right now.  Being a Fair and BalancedTM weblog, a No-Spin ZoneTM in the tradition of Fox News, I felt a need to kinda-sorta-agree-with some of the arguments being made by the other side back there.  But then I had to hit that stupid back button.  I guess I'll have to disprove my writing being "left-sided zealotism" some other time...

[If you would like to read the million-dollar paper in question, why-war.com has kindly posted it]
