Ben Regenspan Pro-family folks foiled 9:44AM EST Wednesday, 1/7/2004 [link to this item]

The American Family Association, "America's Pro-Family Online Activism Organization", is running an online poll (to be presented to Congress) on gay marriage. Presumably, the poll would be used to "prove" that most Americans oppose gay marriage or support watered-down fake marriages, if only the AFA hadn't let the wrong sort of people (i.e. - the public) vote. Currently nearly 60% of the voters favor gay marriage- help make that number even more embarrassing for the AFA.

Ben Regenspan BBC World web TV 9:30PM EST Thursday, 1/1/2004 [link to this item]

Don't spread it around too much, but after looking forever I finally found a highspeed BBC World web video stream here (Window$ Media Player).  During the start of the "war on terror" the Beeb had its own free stream up, but it seems now they're only selling it through a RealOne service.  So I'd assume this is a pirate stream but it's coming in great so far.

Ben Regenspan Sorry for a bad metaphor 6:08PM EST Tuesday, 12/30/2003 [link to this item]

If your dog decided to relax mercury emission regulations, even if it was small and cute, would you applaud it and call what it did "improving" the environment?  Maybe if you were really bad at discipline or worked for the Wall Street Journal or Bush weblog...

Ben Regenspan Post-holiday update 12:07AM EST Tuesday, 12/30/2003 [link to this item]

Bob Harris, who helps with This Modern World (the blog, not strip), is going on a 40th-birthday round-the-world adventure, and keeping a great online travelogue.  I got my folks a signed "Republican Matrix" strip from Tom Tomorrow for Hannukah, and they got me the out-of-print Trotsky biographic trilogy by Isaac Deutscher.  Not much else to say, two weeks off is exhausting.  Hope everyone else's Hannukahs and Christmases and Kwanzaas and Pagan things and Satanic, Discordian and Illuminated ceremonies, etc. were great.  Incidentally, Christmas is apparently under attack by us Jewfolk.  I noticed this when I heard a Christmas song only 19 out of the 20 times I turned on the radio this break.

Oh, the MoveOn anti-Bush ad contest is still going on but there's only a few days left to vote, so go do that if you haven't already.  Unfortunately the ads load slowly if you're not on a high-speed connection, so this is one of the many examples of the inherent lack of real democracy in political efforts conducted online.  I love writing about politics online, and participating in MoveOn-type stuff, and the web is a good outlet for a great many people, but the limitations must be recognized and the 'real world' should be put first.  Only so many people can be reached with this medium, or even by phone, so it is important to emphasize that "the digital revolution" is a revolution chiefly of and for the middle and upper classes, a group which I belong to and which I assume (and polls and common sense show) makes up the majority of those reading these new-fangled blog things and participating in online political activities.  But, anyway, go vote in the MoveOn thing .

Yeah, sorry about the infrequent updates, I think I'm on holiday from excessive computer use.  Let me just take this time to say again: unelectable

Whoa!  MoveOn already has over a thousand anti-Bush ad submissions for its "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest.  Visit bushin30seconds.org to register to watch and rate ad submissions.  Half of the ones I've seen so far are really amazing.

There's a great, hour-long interview of Kucinich up at linktv, which I'm watching right now.

Ben Regenspan Catalyzer Art 8:24PM EST Thursday, 12/18/2003 [link to this item]

Lots of visitors lately, so I thought I'd issue this quick reminder: catalyzerjournal.com is not only a weblog, it started out as an online art, poetry, and writing gallery way back long ago in 1999 and the gallery remains to this day.  Be sure to visit Catalyzer Art, which has new art and writing pieces added at least monthly and which I'm always seeking new submissions for (the submission guidelines are on that page).

Ben Regenspan US News teams up with Bill Moyers 8:42AM EST Wednesday, 12/17/2003 [link to this item]

Fairly right-of-center US News is running a surprisingly strong exposé of Bush administration secrecy.  It's up online, thanks to two obnoxious anti-pot advertisements.

Ben Regenspan Celebrate 'Peace Chanukah' in 2003 3:23PM EST Saturday, 12/13/2003 [link to this item]

The Refuser Solidarity Network, the main organization supporting those in the Israeli forces who refuse to serve in the Occupied Territories, is calling for Jewish communities to gather together during Chanukah (starts next Friday!) this year, and hold special "Peace Chanukah" ceremonies.  From the Ithaca event description: "The Peace Chanukah will focus on celebrating and raising awareness of the positive grassroots efforts that foster goodwill, communication, and trust between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East."  Although you probably don't know about it because the American press either doesn't care or cares a lot in the wrong way about the refusers, the count of those refusing to serve is going up constantly.  As if illustrating the increasing importance of the refusers, The Ithaca Journal for once ran a great, positive article on this issue.  WYCD: Donate to The RSN, find or organize an event in your area.
