The question isn't whether or not Sheik Ahmed Yassin deserved it, but whether it will result in any change for the positive. Judging by the Palestinian response, the answer is no.

Ben Regenspan ACTION: Refusenik group needs money for weekly ads 9:45AM EST Sunday, 3/21/2004 [link to this item]

The Refusers Parents' Forum, one of the major groups supporting the Israeli conscientious objectors, sent out this message today:

We want very much to keep the refusnik issue before the public. We plan, for this purpose, to print a regular advertisement (five inches on two columns) in the Friday, (week-end) edition of Ha'aretz.  The text of the ad is to be modified from week to week. It can serve a number of purposes such as a short and incisive message about the five CO's and their cause; it can also be devoted to greetings from you, your group or your organization.  In any event, we would like to publish the name of the contributors, who made the ad possible.

We have an arrangement with the advertisers for ten ads over two and half months.  Each ad will cost approximately IL 2,300 or $500. (five hundred U.S. dollars.)  We are asking you, as an individual, group or organization to consider covering the expense of one or more ads. We propose to include in the ad, the name of the specific individual or group that made publication possible. We are quite willing to include your greetings or statement of solidarity as the main text.   We repeat that each ad costs $500. We can only succeed on the basis of your decision and commitment to help us with this project.

I and my parents are working on raising money for one of the ads, which we will likely send over under the banner of Jewish Voice for Peace.  Please contact me if you can contribute or know anyone interested.  Ha'aretz is the Israeli equivalent of the New York Times so this message will be reaching a great deal of people and will keep those courageous enough to refuse compulsory service in the spotlight of Israeli politics.

Ben Regenspan Today's protests marking the anniversary of the Iraq war 11:46PM EST Saturday, 3/20/2004 [link to this item]

My mom and sister just got back from the protest in NYC today, which they say was very peaceful (which should be a given, but due to police tactics as of late and the media's habit of spotlighting a violent few...)  There was a large Haitian presence due to the apparent coup, which was a partial focus of the march, and a bunch of nice artwork (which I'm still looking for some pictures of - the New York Times has posted a good short photo series of the protests around the world, however).  Kucinich also spoke; a video is up on the official campaign site.

Unfortunately, the police continued to use the barricading strategy seen in past protests, even closing my mom and sister in separate barricades and reducing the overall level of unity.  One poster to NYC Indymedia pointed out that the police may be practicing for the even higher level of security they have promised at the Republican National Convention protests, and also trying to deter protesters from coming for the convention.  I have no valid reason for not having gone to today's demonstration but am counting on going for the RNC protests.  The security for the convention is being financed by millions of dollars out of the federal funding the city received following September 11th, and I think that the sympathy of the majority of New Yorkers will be with protesters partly as a result of this outrageous waste of resources, opening up the possibility of direct action with a positive outcome and a truly inspiring show of opposition to the Bush agenda.

Lee Gillespie Lesbian minister charged in Methodist court 5:32AM EST Thursday, 3/18/2004 [link to this item]

The Rev. Karen Dammann went on trial in a Methodist Church court Wed after coming out as a lesbian. Under church law, same-sex relationships are considered “incompatible with Christian teachings.” Her lawyer, the Rev Robert C Ward, said he plans to use passages from the Bible and the church’s Book of Discipline in her defense. Ward, who is retired, said of his client “Karen has chosen not to live the lie. She has invited the United Methodist Church to come out of the closet with her and live a life of open honesty.” Protesters, the vast majority of them supportive, greeted her as she arrived at the Seattle church where the trial is taking place with her partner and their young son. If convicted, Dammann could face anything from a disciplinary letter to excommunication. Read the NY Times article here.

Two Unitarian ministers were charged with solemnizing unlicensed marriages for performing 13 same-sex weddings in New Paltz, New York. Dawn Sangrey and Kay Greenleaf performed the marriages after the village’s mayor faced similar charges and postponed ceremonies after he was ordered to temporarily stop solemnizing them. The ministers, if convicted, could face prison terms of up to one year and fines of up to $500. Read the CNN article here.

Lee Gillespie Orange County School District Refuses to Implement Policy Banning Discrimination, May Lose Funding 4:23AM EST Wednesday, 3/17/2004 [link to this item]

The Westminster School District’s Board of Trustees refused to comply with a California state law requiring schools to prohibit discrimination based on “perceived gender.” The three trustees voting against the anti-discrimination policy claim that they did so because they are Christian and the policy would “allow young children and staff to immorally redefine their sexual identity." Judy Ahrens, one of the three, said “I might take a lot of heat for it today, but the rewards are going to be great in heaven.” According to district spokeswoman Trish Montgomery, the superintendent and other administrators “do not see this as a moral issue. It is a matter of complying with the law.” As a result of the board’s decision, the district, which includes 17 schools, could lose up to $40 million in state and federal funding. Lee Gillespie Gay Marriage Update: Mass. and SF 8:40PM EST Thursday, 3/11/2004 [link to this item]

After a break that started Feb 12th, the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention reconvened today, and an amendment banning gay marriage passed the first of several necessary votes. The bill, which would allow civil unions, must be approved by the Legislature in three additional votes before appearing on a statewide ballot, which would take at least two years.

In a related story, the California Supreme Court ordered officials in San Francisco to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, stating that it will decide later whether or not marriage already performed are legal.

Lee Gillespie Multnoma County issuing same-sex marriage licenses 10:28PM EST Wednesday, 3/3/2004 [link to this item]

Multnoma County, Oregon being issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples today. The move came after chairwoman Diane Linn of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners ordered the county to being doing so yesterday. At a news conference today announcing the county’s decision to being issuing licenses, County Attorney Agnes Sowle said “The Oregon Constitution prohibits te county from discriminating against same-sex couples when they are applying for marriage licenses because that kind of discrimination based on gender and based on sexual orientation is not allowed in Oregon.” Read the CNN article here.

Ben Regenspan Special feature: The Theater of Coup 10:18PM EST Wednesday, 3/3/2004 [link to this item]

Gilbert Wesley Purdy, whose poetry has been published by numerous journals including Poetry International and Orbis, (& here, of course), and whose journalistic work has appeared in Albany, Schenectady, and Saratoga papers, is now penning an exclusive series of articles on the current situation in Haiti for Catalyzer.  The introductory piece is already up now in the art section, which has recently been expanded to include journalism, commentary, and reviews (submissions of which are always sought.)  We will keep you posted in the sideblog as new parts are added to the series; like August J. Pollak, I have to admit that this is an issue I am very ignorant about, so it is great to be offered the opportunity to run this exclusive series.

Lee Gillespie Sam Francisco has company 10:24PM EST Monday, 3/1/2004 [link to this item]

Two cities in upstate New York have joined San Francisco in its protest against bans of gay marriage. The mayor of New Paltz announced last Friday that the city would begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses, while Ithaca’s mayor announced that the county clerk’s office would accept applications for marriage licenses from same-sex couples and pass them on the State Health Department. If the applications are denied, the city will “join in any court battle” to overturn the decision and grant licenses to same-sex couples.
