Just a quick thought on the Brian Chontosh story these guys are attempting to use as further evidence of the liberal media conspiracy: Maybe the fact that it's not splashed all over the front pages has something to do with our newsmedia still being embarrassed over having trusted the military's last "account of American valor".

A very good post on Counterspin, on a very pathetic topic: A ball-bearing manufacture company Bush chose to use as one of his settings for bragging about his "plan" for job creation during his campaign just layed off a quarter of its workers and closed a plant.

Ben Regenspan "Not naked, absolutely not." 8:41PM EST Saturday, 5/15/2004 [link to this item]

"No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'!"Sounds like our senators are starting to act good and Parliament-rowdy for once:

JACK REED: Mr Secretary, do you think crouching naked for 45 minutes is humane?

PAUL WOLFOWITZ: Not naked, absolutely not.

JR: So if he's dressed up, that's fine?

Let me put it this way. 72 hours without regular sleep, sensory deprivation which would be a bag over your head for 72 hours. Do you think that's humane? And that's what this says, a bag over your head for 72 hours. Is that humane?

PW: Let me come back to what you said the work…

JR: No, no. Answer the question, Secretary. Is that humane?

PW: I don't know whether it means a bag over your head for 72 hours Senator. I don't know.

JR: Mr Secretary, you're dissembling, non-responsive. Anybody would say putting a bag over someone's head for 72 hours, which is sensory deprivation…

PW: I believe it's not humane. It strikes me as not humane, Senator.

I wonder why.

Janet Buck, a frequent contributor to our poetry section, has just had her third print collection published, entitled "Beckoned By The Reckoning".  I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but the title piece is wonderful and the reviews are looking good.

Ben Regenspan Pens for Afghan children 5:04PM EST Wednesday, 5/12/2004 [link to this item]

Message from Army Public Affairs Officer Terry Welch in Kandahar, reposted on TMW:
As many of you know, I am currently in the apolitical position of Army public affairs specialist in Afghanistan...

When I first mentioned on my blog, Nitpicker, that I was going to be deployed, a large number of you asked how you could help me, what I would need for Afghanistan. The truth is, there's not much. However, I just went on my first mission with a civil affairs group and found a way you might be able to help me out.

It seems that the children of Afghanistan want nothing more than they want a pen.

It was explained to me that the villages through which I traveled (near Kandahar, where I'm based) are so poor that a pen is like a scholarship to these children. They desperately want to learn but, without a pen, they simply won't. It's a long story. I won't bore you with it. Trust me, though, when I say that it would be a big deal if even a few of you could put up the call for pens for me. Anyone interested in helping out could either send some directly to me or go to these sites and send them, where you can find them for as cheap as $.89 a dozen.

Ben Regenspan "Rumsfeld MUST Resign" 10:52AM EST Wednesday, 5/12/2004 [link to this item]

The Kerry campaign has a petition for Rumsfeld's resignation going.  While I put my name on there (and you should, too), I'm kinda hoping that Bush will just let Rumsfeld drag him down with him.

Ben Regenspan Not a fun read 11:17PM EST Thursday, 5/6/2004 [link to this item]

MSNBC has put up the full text of the Taguba report on the latest known torture incident.  It is important to emphasize the "latest" in that last sentence, because that's all this is, the latest war crime of many.  Despite the especially sickening, government-confirmed details of these events, and all the uproar, it is hard to imagine the military justice system that has yet to jail known murderers of prisoners (i.e. war criminals) choosing to do anything more than symbolic.  It is also hard to imagine that Powell was "shocked" - although it might seem that he was acknowledging the significance of the problem by comparing it to My Lai, the government higher-ups were not warned beforehand that the My Lai massacre would occur; although they knew of numerous other atrocities during Vietnam, and what their troops were capable of, they did not have any knowledge of the when + where of a massacre about to occur.  The Red Cross and human rights groups had continually warned our government of the inhumane and illegal conditions in Abu Ghraib and other prisons, and no action was taken.  Rumsfeld knew of the scandal far before 60 Minutes II aired the photos and did nothing to change conditions in the prison; although, thankfully, this was not another massacre, the US government is coming out of this scandal with hands a far deeper shade of crimson than after My Lai, and the spot won't be coming out any time soon.
