Ben Regenspan Reagan's craps were bigger 10:12AM EST Friday, 6/11/2004 [link to this item]

Before you decide that it's only a few of us getting pissed off at the Bush campaigns's cynical attempts (as of now, link goes to an icky Gipper tribute that the Bush team has replaced its main page with for now) to use Reagan's death to its advantage, you may want to read this interview (via AngryFinger, which I just added to the blogroll for reasons having nothing to do with wanting one of jimmy mac's Gmail invites. Seriously, though.), with Reagan's son. Some excerpts:
"My father crapped bigger ones than George Bush"

"The Bush people have no right to speak for my father...these people are overly reaching, overly aggressive, overly secretive, and just plain corrupt. I don't trust these people."

"[M]y father was a man -- that's the difference between him and Bush"

"There were, and will be, a lot of people killed over there. And if you don't care about the Iraqi casualties, what about the American? We stand to lose more people in the next months of occupation than we lost in the weeks of war."

Someone who actually deserves long, syrupy memorial articles just passed away.  Rest in peace, Ray Charles.

Ben Regenspan Why does the president need a lawyer? 1:16AM EST Sunday, 6/6/2004 [link to this item]

Via TMW: John Dean mulls over why Bush would need a private lawyer.  I find this funny because in Dick (one of the best movies of all time, BTW), one of the main characters, a teen girl, asks John Dean why Nixon needed him as a lawyer.  So if my theory that everything that happened in the movie happened also in real life, including Nixon eating pot, proves true, then maybe John Dean was making a little reference to his past here.  Or something.

Ben Regenspan IMPORTANT: Tell NYC Mayor, Parks Commissioner to approve rally @RNC 6:44PM EST Thursday, 5/20/2004 [link to this item]

United for Peace and Justice has planned a Central Park rally for August 29th, the day the Republican National Convention is slated to begin.  Unfortunately, the City denied the request for a permit; now UFPJ has launched a campaign to make Mayor Bloomberg and the Parks Commissioner change their minds, and to allow non-Republicans to exercise their right to organize, too:

[from e-mail]: ...But this struggle is far from over. United for Peace and Justice is gathering support for our right to rally and march: four of the NYC daily newspapers have taken editorial positions supporting our request for the Great Lawn permit; members of the City Council and other elected officials are speaking out; leaders of community organizations, labor unions, religious institutions and others are calling on the city to reverse their decision.

There is still a lot to do to secure the permits. Our right to protest the Bush agenda is on the line, and we need you help to protect everyone's right to dissent.

Right now, today, please call the mayor of NYC to protest the city's outrageous denial of our right to rally in the single best location for the August 29th rally. We hope people from every corner of the country, will flood the offices of the Mayor of NYC and the Parks Commissioner with phone calls and faxes.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg
phone   212-788-3000
fax   212-788-9711

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe
phone   212-360-1305
fax   212-360-1345

Obviously, your call or fax will be most effective if you are a NYC resident.  But I just called Bloomberg's office, and his aide[/guy at an outsourced call center?] was very helpful and audibly took down my message.
Although the idea of UFPJ's campaign seems to be to *really* flood the offices with calls, if you are the type (like me) who is very averse to using phones, or if you can't pay the long distance, you can contact them online:

-Adrian Benepe, the Parks Commissioner
-Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Some guy wants Adbusters pulled from his library.  I don't get what their point in publishing this was, either, and Lasn's writing was either very half-assed or totally anti-Semitic.  I had wanted to subscribe before I read that article, but if there is not a very heartfelt apology in the new issue I for one won't be buying.

Ben Regenspan Abuse of prisoners in the US 11:10PM EST Wednesday, 5/19/2004 [link to this item]

Salon has a very in-depth article by Michelle Goldberg on the latest prisoner abuse scandal, this one in Brooklyn.  Of course, prisons in the US have long been places of abuse, as the recent Boondocks strip excerpted at right pointed out.  Human Rights Watch has documented the total disregard for health and safety in many of our prisons, workers at which regularly do nothing to prevent, or even encourage, rape.

For very good continual coverage of issues relating to prisons, see TalkLeft's frequently-updated "Inmates and Prisons" news category.
